The walls may be straight, the rooms may have labels, and the furniture may fit on the screen, but the plan still has to answer practical questions: Can people move through it? Do doors collide? Are windows useful? Does storage land where life actually happens? Can a contractor, designer, or landlord understand what the drawing is trying to test?

1. Confirm the Purpose of the Plan
Start by naming the job the plan must do. A real estate layout, a renovation concept, a cafe planning draft, and a construction drawing all need different levels of detail. If the plan is only for comparing ideas, approximate room sizes and relationships may be enough. If it will guide purchases, lease decisions, or contractor conversations, it needs more reliable dimensions and clearer annotations.
Write the purpose in one sentence. For example: "Test whether a two-bedroom apartment can include a home office without shrinking the living room too far." That sentence keeps the review focused. 2. Check the Outer Footprint First

A bedroom may technically fit a bed while leaving no usable wall for storage. A meeting room may fit a table but not the chairs when people sit down.
Check each major room for a clear primary use. Living rooms need a seating wall or focal direction. Bedrooms need a bed wall, circulation, and closet access. Kitchens need enough counter sequence for storage, washing, prep, cooking, and serving. Offices need workstation depth and acoustic separation.

4. Walk the Circulation Paths
Good circulation is easy to overlook because it is empty space. Trace the path from the main entrance to every major destination: kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, workspace, reception, storage, exit, and service area. If a route cuts through a seating group, crosses a busy kitchen work zone, or squeezes between furniture, the plan will feel worse in real life than it looks on paper.
Look for paths that are direct but not exposed. A guest should not have to walk through a private bedroom zone to reach a bathroom. Office visitors should be able to reach reception or a meeting room without walking through every desk.
5. Test Doors, Windows, and Openings
Door swings reveal many layout problems. A door that hits a vanity, blocks a cabinet, collides with another door, or opens into a narrow path creates daily friction. In small rooms, changing a hinged door to a pocket, sliding, or out-swing door may recover useful area, but that decision has construction implications.
Windows deserve the same attention. They are not just decorative marks on the wall. They affect daylight, privacy, ventilation, furniture placement, and emergency access in some room types. A bed under a window may work in one plan and feel exposed in another. A kitchen window may make the sink pleasant, but it can remove upper cabinet space. A retail window can draw people in, but it can also limit shelving.

6. Place Furniture at Real Sizes
A floor plan without furniture can be technically clean and practically unusable. Add the largest objects first: beds, sofas, dining tables, desks, reception counters, exam tables, gym equipment, shelving, or commercial kitchen equipment. Then test the space around them.
Furniture should not be treated as decoration. It is how you test whether a room works. A dining table needs chair pullout space. A desk needs a chair path and sometimes a camera background. A bed needs approach space and closet access. A salon station needs room for the stylist to move. A treadmill needs clearance behind it. 7. Check Storage and Utility Space
Weak plans often forget storage because storage is not exciting. In real use, storage determines whether a layout stays clean. Homes need entry storage, bedroom closets, pantry space, linen storage, and utility access. Offices need supply cabinets, IT equipment, cleaning storage, and personal storage.
Place storage near the activity it supports. Coats and shoes belong near entry. Towels belong near bathrooms, gyms, salons, or spa rooms. Office supplies should not require crossing the whole workplace. Retail stock should connect logically to receiving and the sales floor. 8. Review Light, Noise, and Privacy

Give daylight to the spaces where people spend the most time. Workstations, living rooms, classrooms, waiting areas, and customer seating benefit from natural light. 9. Look for Accessibility and Code Questions Early
Early floor plans are not code documents, but they should still flag obvious compliance questions. Check whether entrances, corridors, restrooms, seating, counters, and exits could plausibly support accessible use. Commercial layouts should pay special attention to egress paths, restroom access, emergency exits, door clearances, and occupant load.

10. Decide What Must Be Redrawn
At the end of the review, sort issues into three groups. First, fix-now problems: impossible doors, rooms that are too small, blocked circulation, missing major zones, or unclear entrances. Second, verify-later questions: wall thickness, fixture models, final furniture dimensions, code review, and site measurements. Third, acceptable tradeoffs: choices that are not perfect but support the main goal.
